About the Art
Inspiration:
The French word for butterfly, Papillon, invokes images of beautiful vibrant colors. This installation is inspired by the swallowtail butterfly, one of the most beautiful and beloved butterfly species, who are commonly found in Indiana. While butterflies are emblematic creatures, they are most commonly associated with allegories of transformation and change. In this moment of transition for our world, there seems no better symbol of hope for this moment. Like caterpillars crawling into a chrysalis, we know what it is like to be confined to a space while we face conflict and struggle and weather the storm from the world outside. Butterflies are delicate creatures, facing numerous hardships and yet they survive to bring beauty into our world. Our hope is that through these struggles we can grow stronger and create a brighter future for our world.
These giant butterfly wings offer a way strikingly animate Riverside Park. The vibrant wings add color to the park, interrupting the greenery, contributing to the fall colors, and in cold weather standing out vibrantly against the snow.
Passersby will be pulled in by the backdrop of vibrant textures and colors framing visitors figures, as they discover for one magical moment what it’s like to have wings.
In addition to serving as a symbol of hope and transformation, this installation seeks to showcase the importance of the natural world
while also providing a non-contact installation that can be enjoyed by all.
Each butterfly is comprised of two large butterfly wings standing upright, reaching 8-feet tall and 9-feet wide. The wooden wings are cut via CNC and reinforced in the rear with steel, weighted, and anchored to the ground to ensure stability.
Butterflies are a lucky charm during cycles of change within your life. It keeps you moving during these periods of renewal and rebirth. It helps bring a missing playfulness and lightness of being.
