About the Art

The piece is titled Taraxacum Wedge. It is inspired by the Taraxacum erythrospermum which is the species of dandelion most common in North America.

This form was chosen for this project as a way to connect with park visitors. This flower will be easy to recognize but people will be amazed by its scale. The conceptual backdrop of the piece lies in the materials. The piece is made of 2000 golf clubs zip tied onto a welded steel armature. Part of the design of the work incorporates a sense of discovery as passers by visually inspect the piece and realize what it’s made of. This is a tool of observation and I have used it in many previous projects so I am aware of its effectiveness. The sculpture has a visually high impact and is maintenance free. I’ve also factored in high weather durability and of course safety is my primary concern.

The sculpture is a 12-foot diameter sphere. The armature, which is already in production is constructed of welded steel pipe and steel rod and is made to be dismantle and be reassembled onsite. The golf clubs are fastened to the frame using zip ties as well as other fasteners.
